SEM Konferansen 2010 in Review

As both a first-time visitor and speaker at SEM konferansen 2010 in Oslo, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. But after having spent three busy days with some of the worlds most prolific search marketers and plenty of great local talent, I’m very impressed by the level of knowledge sharing going on both in and between sessions. I tip my hat to the organisers.

The first day of SEM Konferansen had two tracks of so-called Executive Seminars. This consisted of two batches of three hour sessions. For the first session I chose Andrew Goodman‘s seminar on Advanced Paid-Search Tactics. Even if I found a lot of the content a bit basic for my own needs, Andrew shared a couple of nuggets that for me made it a very worthwhile session.

During the second half of the day, I listened to the wise words of Bryan Eisenberg and his 12-step program to Improve PPC ROI. Full of energy and sharing real-world examples, Bryan worked the floor to get the crowd interacting. That was a tough job initially, but he got there in the end. I especially enjoyed his concept of conversion trinity (relevance, value and call to action) as a way of quickly evaluating the conversion path from keyword to landing page.

The second and third day of the conference had a more traditional structure divided into one-hour sessions. I particularly enjoyed learning from Kristjan Mar Hauksson aka mr Iceland. He shared a wealth of information on how news are disseminated online and picked-up by the established media. Kristjan hinted that his company is about to release a research paper on how journalists use the web for research, and that the best way of picking this up is to follow him on twitter @optimizeyourweb.

Finally, my last session as an audience member were two presentations by this years winner and runner-up of the prestigious Gulltaggen for best search strategies. From a non-Nordic residents point of view, this was particularly enlightening to understand how search marketing is currently being used in Norway compared to larger markets.
