So you’re keen on getting your foot in the door of search marketing? Well I cant’t blame you, it’s a fabulously buoyant industry with great career progression to be had by the talented, analytical and tenacious internet marketer. Here’s five tips to get you started:
- Be a Geek or a Nerd but definitely not a Dork. Dweebs lack the healthy dose of obsession that it necessary to succeed in the field, so should pass on this career path altogether.
- Be Curious and question things all day, every day. Don’t take old truths for granted, challenge them and ask why and how you’re supposed to best perform a certain process. The beauty and curse of search is that it changes on a daily basis, and so you need to constantly challenge old conventions.
- Be Market(ing) Savvy. Don’t just blindly stare at your keywords and KPI’s day-in, day-out. To truly excel in search marketing you need to Get the Bigger Picture; understand the industry of your campaigns and how your efforts fit into the overall marketing mix.
- Be Bold. Being curious is brilliant, but you also need to have the confidence to champion and implement new tests and also stand tall for the possibly glory or dirt that comes with it depending on the outcome.
- Be Humble. Regardless of what your gut and experience may tell you at times, have faith in the numbers and as long as your methodology is alright you should do well. And meticulously document all trials so you don’t learn the same lesson twice.

A highly scientific chart that I found in my "banter" inbox one day...
